During election season, I frequently think about a feeling attributed to statesman Adlai Stevenson: In a democracy, people get the government they deserve.

All over southern Maine these past few weeks, I have heard people deliberating on the casino question on the Nov. 4 ballot. Many say the same thing: "I don't know how I'm going to vote." Or, "It's confusing. It's complicated."
