Some Legislators Want Online Gambling Controls - 2003-03-14
There is an existing effort to permit states to regulate and tax online gambling, even as others in Congress renew attempts to ban the burgeoning type of wagering. This attempt is in part thanks to a tiny bipartisan group of legislators.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., instituted legislation Wednesday that would unfasten the door to legalizing online gambling in states interested in licensing, overseeing and accumulating taxes from the growing industry.

Bill to make Internet gambling illegal gets approval - 2003-03-14
A bill was authorized that would successfully outlaw Internet gambling by making it a crime for Web site operators to seize wagers with bank instruments such as credit cards, checks or wire transfers. A House panel authorized a bill today.

The House Financial Services Committee sanctioned the legislation through a vote. The bill was relaunched this year by Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, and it now faces a full House vote.
