Count us in, desperate states say to gambling - 2003-03-17
Coping with some of the worst financial conditions since World War II, Wisconsin and an increasing number of states are working to expand gambling operations as a method to plug yawning budget holes and dodge the political hemlock of increasing income taxes or sales taxes.
Disregarding many of the road-to-perdition protestation that for decades have stood in loud opposition to casinos, slot machines, racetracks and other games of chance, dozens of states are seeking new methods of broadening legalized gambling's presence.
