Illegal Online Gambling Thriving - 2003-03-19
Over $2 billion will be illicitly wagered by Americans through offshore Internet gambling sites this year, according to testimony Tuesday morning before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee.

The panel is seeking legislation proposed by Sen. John Kyl to sever American access to the sites by prohibiting U.S. banks, credit card companies and other Internet payment systems from making payments to gambling sites.

Defenders of a ban on Internet gambling held their ground Tuesday in opposition of a budding attempt in Congress to give states the right to legalize and tax virtual casinos.

Members of the Senate Banking Committee partnered with representatives of college athletics, state attorneys general and the Bush administration in reproving Internet gambling.
