Local Indonesian Officials Angry Over Gambling - 2003-03-24
In spite of strong objection, gambling continues to grow in Batam, but what has a variety of religious and community leaders angry is that the owners are are acting criminally behind the backs of local security authorities.
The local administration and the central government have stern laws which prohibit gambling in all its forms, but there are a minimum of five big gambling dens on the island, and nearly all the hotels on the island have supplied special districts for visitors to gamble at.
