Gambling battle in high court - 2003-09-13
The state Supreme Court consented Friday to hear two lawsuits that could determine the governor’s authority to sign gaming compacts with American Indian tribes and whether the Wisconsin Constitution outlaws casino gambling altogether.

Assembly Speaker John Gard, part of a group of Republican policymakers who filed one of the suits, stated the decisions would be the most crucial on American Indian gaming in Wisconsin for years to come.

More tribes ponder gambling - 2003-09-13
A North County tribe is one of two in the region planning to hit the state’s most recent casino jackpot.

Under agreements quietly signed by Gov. Gray Davis this week, the two Indian bands each will be allowed to have a casino, and a maximum of 350 slot machines.
The gambling agreements, or compacts, must first be legalized by the Legislature before taking effect.
