Tribes prepared for battle over slots monopoly - 2004-01-18
Faced with a proposed bid to stop their voter-approved monopoly on slot machines, California Indian casino tribes have started assembling an arsenal that features legal challenges, lots of money -- and possibly an initiative of their own.

The proposed measure, drafted and bankrolled by the state's horse racing and card room businesses, would need California tribes with casinos to hand over 25 percent of their earnings to the state and meet other regulations.

Consultants say mismanagement to blame for landmark casino downfall - 2004-01-18
The party is done at Binion's Horseshoe Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.
The near-bankrupt property is defunct, and industry consultants are placing part of the blame on owner Becky Binion Behnen.

Gone were the casino's liberal comps and the well-known policy of taking any size bet. Also removed were the property's second-floor bingo room and its previous stand-alone sports book that was combined with the race book.
