Banishment, long viewed as the absolute punishment among American Indians, is making a return among tribes trying to find more effective methods to deal with gangs and drugs.
The contemporary version means commanding troublemakers off the reservation, but can also involve stripping them of their tribal membership -- a serious penalty in tribes that share casino profits with members.
