Casinos bring advantages - 2004-01-21
As new dueling researcg predicts the upside and downside of a proposed Ho-Chunk casino here, social services information from Milwaukee, Brown and Sauk counties from recent years show sometimes striking local benefits from existing casinos.

A 1998 study by the Cambridge, Mass.-based Economics Resource Group, for instance, found that several years later after the Ho-Chunk's casino in Baraboo opened in 1992, 56 percent fewer tribe members needed welfare... and 52 percent fewer received food stamps.

Deal attained on horse racing, Indian gaming bill - 2004-01-21
Gov. Brad Henry explained Tuesday a settlement has been reached to allow three horse racetracks in Oklahoma to install electronic gaming machines similar to those operated at tribal casinos.

Henry, a Democrat, stated that the plan "would not bring Las Vegas-style casino gaming to Oklahoma. It would simply address the same type of games that have been played at tribal casinos across the state.''
