Casino tax battle bends to courts - 2004-01-23
Bargaining in months-long arguement between Madera County and the Chukchansi Indian tribe over a multimillion-dollar property tax bill seem to have concluded with both sides saying legal action is a possibility.

The county and the tribe have been working since last spring to reach a settlement concerning the tax status of the property beneath the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.

Calif. tribe proposes deal with state - 2004-01-23
The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has handed a thorny olive branch to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, proposing a new ballot initiative that demands tribes to pay as much as corporations to the state general fund.

As a substitution, tribes would be permitted to run as many casinos as they would like on their reservations and to feature roulette and craps, which they cannot do under existing state law. The tribe is one of the wealthiest in the state, with two casinos in Riverside County.
