Tribes deliberate with state over casino taxes - 2004-01-23
Several California Indian tribes that run casinos entered into negotiations with an aide to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a first move in a discussion targetted towards securing $500 million for the state next year.

Schwarzenegger wants to wrest taxes from the Indian casino owners, who gave over $2.7 million to the campaign of competing candidate Cruz Bustamante in last year's election.

The West Baden Springs Hotel, the once-grand dome that has sat idle for nearly two decades in Orange County, now has a bidder.

The purchase of the hotel is dependent on Adolph's group, Tranchant Indiana, being chosen to run the casino, which could launch next year. But to those who have worked to bring jobs and money back to the financially strapped county, the bid symbolizes progress.
