California playing election roulette - 2004-01-23
California's Indian tribes have been very skilled at getting their way on gaming. This is all the more reason why the Schwarzenegger administration, which is attempting to get tribes to fork over some of their casino profits, should be concerned about their latest gambit by a powerful Palm Springs tribe.
The Aqua Caliente band has proposed a bill under which the tribes would pay the state 8.8 percent of casino profits, which is the same income tax paid by corporations in California, in exchange for unlimited gaming rights.
