The casino business — not including the nation's various American Indian casinos — is a $27 billion annual business in the United States, according to the American Gaming Association, a trade group.
Nevada is at the top of the list, with $9.4 billion in gross gaming earnings in 2002, followed by New Jersey with $4.4 billion. But newer casino markets — Mississippi, Louisiana and Illinois — have all passed or are near to $2 billion.
