Hate speech on Indians and casinos undeserved - 2004-01-28
When someone scribbles on a postcard "the only good Indian is a dead Indian," and "dead Indians upcoming," the reaction should be immediate and unequivocal.

An Indian tribe's proposal to establish a casino without regard to public opinion or the rules governing other developments would undoubtedly engender opposition. It is fair debate to criticize the role of local officials and to increase concerns about the social and environmental consequences of a casino on land deemed as open space.

If DeJope Bingo Hall is developed into a casino, the city of Madison's annual portion of Ho-Chunk revenue will likely be barely enough to cover added police and fire costs, according to a city report disclosed Tuesday.
