Local agency looks for center to help future addicts - 2004-01-29
A local agency that assists problem gamblers stated it already had many clients before the slot-like video gaming machines launched Wednesday at the former Saratoga Raceway.

He wants to be certain stickers with his organization's 24-hour helpline--1-800-437-1611--are on each machine.
Callers to the number are sent to Martell's organization, he stated.

Help will be only one call away for those connected to Canada's first government-backed phone counselling program for obsessive gamblers. Ontario is set to disclose plans today for a pilot venture that may help 10,000 people annually in the province when fully operational.

The province contributes two per cent of earnings from slot machines at racetracks and four charitable casinos to pay for problem gambling research and treatment.
