California tribes plan campaign against allowing track slots - 2004-01-08
Six Indian tribes in California have commited $1.5-million indivually to finance a campaign against a proposed November ballot initiative that would allow slot machines at state racetracks and card rooms.
The tribes currently have the exclusive right to run casino-style gambling in California, and they return only minimal proceeds to the state. If the ballot measure passes, the tribes could pay as much as 25% of revenue to the state, which could total as much as $1.25-billion annually.
