Key Legislator: Don't bet on gambling at Polk - 2004-02-10
Des Moines officials thinking about turning the soon-to-be-vacant Polk County Convention Complex into a casino would be out of luck even if lawmakers complied and expanded gambling, a key legislator disclosed on Monday.

The Des Moines City Council last week agreed to get engrossed in the statewide dispute over gambling. Council members mentioned the convention complex, which will shut down Aug. 1, 2005, as a possible site if legislators increase the number of casino licenses in the state.

Experts dispute impact of local casino - 2004-02-10
As the Feb. 17 Wisconsin primary gets closer, controversy is ongoing and is surrounding a proposed casino in Madison. Adding to the conflict, some watchdogs insist having a gambling venue so close to the University of Wisconsin campus could create problems for students.

McCann said Milwaukee has seen a rise in crime since the launching of the Milwaukee casino. The largest increase featured embezzlement problems.
