Sebelius gambling project reviewed by committee - 2004-02-11
A Senate committee got its first observation Tuesday at Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' expanded gambling initiative, launching what will probably be a lengthy bitter battle.

Matt All, Sebelius' chief counsel, briefed the Federal and State Affairs Committee on the plan for up to five large state-owned casinos, up to 2,500 video lottery machines throughout Kansas' five pari-mutuel tracks, and up to five video lottery machines at every 240 halls operated by fraternal organizations.

Casino bid pits expectations on mining relocation - 2004-02-11
A longstanding fight over a mining pit has landed in the middle of a high-stakes proposal to substitute Rock Island's riverboat casino with a $90 million facility that could bring a hotel, conference center and up to 400 jobs.

The site chosen for the casino is owned by a Moline company that will put the land on the market if it has approval to relocate its sand-and-gravel venture to an area in the vicinity where neighbors have lobbied to contest a pit for years due to flooding and environmental worries.
