Uncertain destiny for Castaways, former employees - 2004-02-11
Over 100 former Castaways employees turned out Tuesday for assistance at a one-stop re-employment aid center even while the new owner of the hotel-casino affirmed several businesses have shown an interest in purchasing the property.

Meanwhile, Vestin Mortgage, which purchased the 49-year-old hotel-casino Feb. 2 for $20.7 million from VSS Enterprises, has commenced marketing the property, company spokesman Steve Stern reported.

Water worries anti-casino advocates - 2004-02-11
Anti-casino supporters are aiming at a 96-year-old U.S. Supreme Court ruling to contest that a proposed Indian casino may suck the city's water supply dry.

Bill Muller, a member of Concerned Citizens Against the Casino, declared that a 1908 Supreme Court ruling — called the Winters Doctrine — gives American Indians reserved water rights that would permit them to tap a well into the city's water supply.
