Legislative leaders should work out an agreement with Iowa's land-based casinos instead of threaten a new tax. Otherwise, they risk another court fight and the loss of additional profits in the meantime, which Iowa can hardly afford.
GOP leaders are upset that Iowa's Supreme Court decided racetrack casinos can't be taxed differently from riverboat casinos. The disparity was 20 percent for boats vs. up to 36 percent for tracks. That breached the equal-protection law of the state constitution, the court declared.
