Schwarzenegger hires gaming commission chief - 2004-02-13
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced the long-vacant chairmanship of the state's Gambling Control Commission on Thursday with a previous Wilson administration official and police chief whose jurisdictions have featured casino-dotted South Lake Tahoe.
Schwarzenegger's administration is renegotiating compacts with much of the state's Indian tribes who are involved in casino gambling as it works to bridge a gaping budget shortfall.

Regulator insists tribal recognition system is faulty - 2004-02-13
A leading Nevada casino regulator Thursday called for an examination of the federal process by which Indian tribes are acknowledged and lands are authorized for casino development, calling the current system "perverse" and unfair for some tribes.

Interpretations of federal law are permitting recently made tribes with a handful of members to protect more lucrative lands for casinos than the majority of tribes with historical properties that are in remote regions, said Scherer.
