Man trades in sandwiches for casino - 2004-02-13
Subway restaurant founder Frederick A. DeLuca disclosed Thursday that he has supported the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation since 1996 with hopes of assisting it in building a casino resort in Bridgeport, where he launched his first submarine sandwich shop 39 years ago.

The city previously had a deal with a more local tribe, the Golden Hill Paugussetts, in which Bridgeport would donate property for a casino in exchange for settlement of land claims and a part of slot machine earnings.

For the first time since Caesars Entertainment Inc. emerged as the sole owner of Bally's Casino New Orleans last year, the dying riverboat is about to embark on a major effort to lure new gamblers and push existing patrons to gamble more to revive its sagging funds.

Bally's has had a tough time in recent years and will be confronted with more rivals once slot machines arrive at the Fair Grounds racetrack.
