Tribal compacts under scrutiny - 2004-02-13
The perennial encouragement to stop the monopoly of tribal casinos has acquired a powerful ally in Gov. Tim Pawlenty as the Legislature seeks ways to bolster lagging earnings in the state budget.

Essentially, the compacts state this: The state's tribes may operate casinos on reservation land, that the only games allowed are blackjack and video slot machines and that each tribe must pay $13,636.36 per year to the state for regulation.

It seems the folks at Harrah's, who were in Rhode Island lately, attempted to deliver that message - and with a straight face. But someone secretly released an internal message from the casino chain this week recommending that a casino could "hurt" those established gambling emporiums.
