At 42, James Robinson is at a standstill, just like the gambling trade around him.
A one-time casino shift manager, for the last five months Robinson has been employed at Corky's, a restaurant leasing space in the Tropicana Casino Resort. He earns $6.50 hourly as a restaurant host - roughly half of what he made at his previous job and $1.32 less than a casino host.

There are roughly 500 subcontracted employees in Atlantic City, where casino industry employment has slid from its high in 1997.

Six punters say they have been robbed of their casino winnings after GrandWest in Goodwood has rejected compensating their jackpots right away.

The payouts amount to roughly R300 000. The winners waited for around two hours on Monday afternoon, but left the Sun International's Western Cape gambling showpiece upset.

Strand punter and gold card member Eric Meyer, who won just under R190 000 on the coin machines on Monday, stated that he had been playing on the machine for under an hour when he won the jackpot.
