Vegas Hotel Earnings Surge as Casino Revenue Drops - 2004-02-17
Hotel operations, observing a return of leisure travelers and limited expansion, set a record in January and are on track to meet new marks in succeeding months, operators and analysts claimed Monday.
Revenues from hotel rooms, food and beverages at the leading nine hotel-casinos in Las Vegas rose close to 10 percent compared to an increase of solely 2.4 percent in total hotel-casino operation earnings in 2003, statistics disclosed Monday by Applied Analysis show.

Tribal Recognition Procedure "Disgusting" - 2004-02-17
Liz Bentson in the Las Vegas Sun has reported that Scott Scherer, a member of Nevada’s Gaming Control Board and a “top Nevada casino regulator” has requested for a “review of the federal process by which Indian tribes are recognized and lands are approved for casino development.”

“It's a loophole that investors are exploiting,” he explained, adding that tribes with no possessioon of land are manipulated into purchasing land, gain recognition, and then build casino businesses, with the investors dividing the profits, of course, in a business they themselves would not otherwise have any legal access to.
