New Zealanders Views Wanted On New Gambling Policy - 2004-02-17
Aucklanders are being asked to give their opinions on Auckland City's new draft gambling venue policy that bounds the amount of electronic gaming machines, commonly dubbed pokies.

The new policy is mandatory under the Gambling Act, placed into law on 19 September 2003. Under the Act, councils are required to assume a policy for class four gambling venues. Class four gambling is interpreted as any activity that includes external use of a casino gaming device.

For South Mississippi casinos and retail businesses, the blend of Valentine's Day and Presidents Day was a smash, clinging slot machines and cash registers.
Casino spokesman Rich Westfall of the Isle of Capri shared that the casino's 367-room hotel was completely reserved for the long weekend.

"Normally, we're running very high, but this weekend was different," he explained. "It's times like this that we wish we had our new hotel," which is ready to launch May 1, 2005.
