Majority of Iowans are against more gambling - 2004-02-17
The majority of Iowans feel the state needs more gambling, as reported by The Des Moines Register's copyright Iowa Poll.
The study in Monday's publication shows that 60 percent of the state's adults are against a rise in the number of casinos in Iowa.
But a majority of Iowans -- 54 percent-- do back the addition of table games, like blackjack and poker at racetrack casinos, for example, Prairie Meadows in Altoona and racetracks in Dubuque and Council Bluffs.

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino officials reported record slot machine handles in January in spite of the bitterly frosty weather.

Slot machine win, or the total Mohegan Sun after all payouts, was $64.5 million, a hike of 13.3 percent over the last year. The average daily win per unit increased 14 percent, to $333. The hold, or percentage of the handle maintained by the casino, was 7.97 percent, a .44 rise over January 2003.
