Republicans, independents, late-voters assist Edwards - 2004-02-18
An unexpected heavy Republican turnout and a late surge in support from independents helped John Edwards to a shockingly close second-place finish behind John Kerry in Wisconsin's Democratic primary, an Associated Press exit poll found.

In a contest open to all constituents on a day with a nonpartisan primary for mayor in Milwaukee and a vote on casino gambling in Madison, one in 10 Democratic primary constituents described themselves as Republicans _ and Edwards won as many of their votes as did Kerry and Howard Dean combined.

Clark County OKs settlement for possible Cowlitz tribal casino - 2004-02-18
In an assembly marked by angry outbursts from some audience members, Clark County commissioners Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a settlement that will govern relations with the Cowlitz tribe if it develops 152 acres west of La Center junction.

The anticipated use of the property--a casino--drew a less-than-enthusiastic reaction. The tribe is preparing an environmental assessment for a casino, although it has not officially announced its plans.
