Local voters decline casino - 2004-02-18
For the Ho-Chunk Nation, $1 million spent trying to persuade Dane County voters to authorize turning its Madison bingo hall into a full-blown Las Vegas-style casino couldn't purchase a win.

Locals rejected the proposal by a 2-to-1 margin Tuesday, in addition to the $91 million the tribe had promised to pay the city of Madison and the county if the casino went through.
"It's unfortunate," stated Ho-Chunk Attorney General Rebecca Weise.

Hard Rock, Control Board talks ongoing - 2004-02-18
The Hard Rock hotel-casino and lawyers for the state Gaming Control Board are still negotiating a possible settlement of the board's Jan. 21 complaint involving the Hard Rock's advertising campaigns, after regulators' lawyers gave the Hard Rock a two-week extension as the two sides try to resolve their differences.

The Las Vegas Hard Rock faces a fine of as much as $300,000 for the three-count complaint, which charged the boutique Paradise Road property with not living up to the terms of a 2002 settlement that resolved a complaint against the hotel-casino for permitting sexual activity to take place in a nightclub.
