Project calls for boost in racing subsidies - 2004-02-20
The state's horse racing trade would receive a $17 million raise in annual subsidies from riverboat casino taxes under a proposal narrowly endorsed Thursday by the Senate Finance Committee.

Supporters explained increasing subsidies from $27 million to $44 million would heighten purses at the state's two pari-mutuel tracks and help grow the struggling industry statewide.

Possible buyers weigh Castaways' profitability - 2004-02-20
Three weeks after closing, the Castaways is garnering interest from prospective buyers, including a group of small casino buyers who've toured the property and are interested in purchasing and relaunching the 49-year-old hotel-casino.

Randy Miller, Rich Iannone and Rich Gonzales, the proprietors of the Bighorn casino in North Las Vegas and of the Longhorn casino on Boulder Highway, have toured the property and are deliberating whether to purchase and relaunch it as a casino, Gonzales explained.
