Members of the Senate Finance Committee embarrassed themselves, the Senate and the state this week. Indiana is dealing with a $1.03 billion budget deficit. Legislators claim there isn't enough money for something as basic as full-day kindergarten.
Oddly, on the same day the committee was betting on the horses, the Senate defeated a measure that would have paid for 20,000 additional slots for full-day kindergarten. But the gaming business must find a way to survive on its own -- without depending on casinos or government subsidies.
