Video-poker machines ought to be contraband in Georgia.
But despite a July 2002 legislation aimed at prohibiting the machines, the games in the past year have started popping up across the state. As recently as November in Hart County, sheriff's deputies confiscated 10 video-poker machines and about $13,000 in cash.

The 2002 Georgia legislation barred any commercial video machine - poker, keno, blackjack or other card game or spinning "line-up" games - based on chance, not skill.

The overcast February sky and wind-whipped surf look cold, gray and unwelcoming. White caps break high and the waves and spray crash angrily against the empty white sand.
The ocean's a perfect reflection of my mood late Saturday morning as I stand on the same boardwalk I once ran around on as a kid. I'm almost as poor now as I was then.

I linger, pausing to recall that everything must change - even my luck - prior to my retreat to the warmth of the Tropicana casino's lounge.
