Feds Associated in Pushing Tribe's for New Casino - 2004-02-22
A once-tiny, almost destitute American Indian tribe is pushing hard to construct a $100 million casino - but it's not conventional tribal associates gunning for wealth.

Regional BIA officials launched the membership against the traditional leaders' wishes to feature members from two other bands in the district. The federal officials then oversaw an Aug. 10, 2002, vote that swapped the old officials for a pro-casino organization that features some of the BIA staff workers themselves.

Casino measure complete, but immobile - 2004-02-22
The Legislature denied a proposed amendment to write into the state constitution language needing constituent authorization for location of a casino in their county. The proposal, penned by Sen. Adrian Smith of Gering, was rejected on a 20-18 count.

After an hour and a half of deliberation on the expanded gambling measure, senators moved on to other legislative business, leaving the casino plan intact but immobile for now. The measure will be at the head of Monday's legislative agenda.
