Ranks of small casino-seeking tribe unexpectedly grow - 2004-02-23
A once-tiny, American Indian tribe that was near destitution is pushing hard to establish a $100 million casino -- but it's not conventional tribal members targeting wealth.

Hundreds of people have been newly included to the Ione Band of Miwok Indians' membership rolls, which were launched by regional Bureau of Indian Affairs officials. Among the new members are a group of BIA employees and dozens of their family members.

Foes say agency 'took over' California tribe - 2004-02-23
A once-tiny, almost penniless American Indian tribe is urging hard to establish a $100 million casino — but it's not conventional tribal members who are seeking riches.

Regional BIA officials launched the membership rolls to feature members from two other bands in the district, against the wishes of the Ione Band's traditional leaders. The federal officials then supervised an Aug. 10, 2002, election that swapped the old leaders for a pro-casino group that features some of the BIA staff members themselves.
