Investigation of accused BIA conflict wanted - 2004-02-24
A Virginia congressman on Monday asked the Justice and Interior departments and Congress' General Accounting Office to investigate what he considered "shocking" suspected conflicts of interest by the Sacramento-based regional office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The tribe's new leadership has been granted $1.9 million from the state's Tribal Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, and is strongly urging to establish a $100 million, 2,000-slot machine casino in Plymouth, in one of California's fast-growing wine regions, a casino that could generate roughly $185 million annually.

Legislator suspends vote on measure - 2004-02-24
Gambling foes continue to control the tenor of the Legislature's debate over whether to give constituents a voice in allowing casinos in the state.
No vote was taken on the casino gambling proposal Monday, which marked the start of the second week of debate on the topic.

Backers of the bill introduced an amendment they anticipated would sway needed votes in their favor. Rather than eight casinos, as initially would have been permitted, the compromise called for only up to five.
