Despite age, deficit and megaresort trend, Riviera stays strong - 2004-02-24
Whenever I pass the Riviera, I get the feeling I'm watching a Las Vegas casino trade version of "Survivor."

Not that the venerable casino, which launched in 1955 and once was home to the communities hottest acts, hasn't tried to keep up. Despite a long-term debt load that threatens to crush the business, the Riviera flaunts a refreshing kind of Vegas traditionalism in decor, shows and casino marketing.

Businessman faces battle to operate casino cruises - 2004-02-24
An Upstate businessman who wants to run gambling cruises-to-nowhere from the docks of this sleepy Colleton County beach town is confronted with a battle from town officials.

The ships carry gamblers off the coast beyond the 3-mile line marking international waters, then fire up slot machines and open table games like blackjack, poker and roulette.
He said uniformity is the argument and that it is illegal to permit casino boats in one county, Horry, and outlaw them in others.
