Entrepreneur faces obstacle to operate casino cruises from beach town - 2004-02-24
An Upstate entrepreneur who wants to operate gambling cruises-to-nowhere from the docks of this sleepy Colleton County beach town is seeing a battle ahead from town officials.

Cheves claimed is suing Georgetown County, which passed a similar bill blocking such gambling ships after he attempted to locate in Murrells Inlet in 2002. He said uniformity is the argument and that it is illegal to permit casino boats in one county, Horry, and outlaw them in others.

Add-ons beef up gambling bid - 2004-02-24
Legislators filed a flurry of alterations to a gambling bill Monday in the hope they can put their own stamp on the legislation, which is planned for debate Thursday in the Iowa House.

Rep. Steve Lukan, R-New Vienna, wants to prevent the state from granting new gambling licenses, and his alteration would strike the part of the bill permitting up to five new casinos.
