Tribal chair disagrees with distinct treatment of BIA workers - 2004-02-25
As the FBI begun probing alleged conflicts of interest featuring Bureau of Indian Affairs regional officials Wednesday, the chair of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians stated there was no unique treatment of BIA officials who stood to benefit from their own actions and membership in the tribe.

As a result, initial tribal affiliates have no representatives among the tribe's new leadership, which now is looking to construct a $100 million, 2,000-slot machine casino.

Four congressmen are calling for a probe into the ballooning membership of California's Ione Band of Miwok Indians, which has risen in number from 70 people to 535 people since 2002. Officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs are suspected of adding family members to the tribe's rolls, ostensibly so they can divide up the proceeds from a proposed casino.
