State measures would lure tribe, Compton to gaming table - 2004-02-25
A rival faction of a severely split Los Angeles County tribe would be permitted to construct a casino in Compton under legislation introduced by a state policymaker.

A pair of bills by Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, D-Compton, would declare an abandoned auto mall the reservation of the Gabrielino Tongva tribe and order the state to award a gambling settlement, or compact, authorizing a casino at the site.

Ex-butcher convicted in murder case - 2004-02-25
An ex-butcher suspected of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in her Friars Point home was found guilty of first-degree murder Tuesday in Coahoma County Circuit Court.

According to police reports, Dukes, a one-time butcher at the Horseshoe Casino, entered the house around 7 p.m. and got into a dispute with Jones, a case manager for the state Department of Human Services.
