Maryland Anti-Casino Senators Switch Roles - 2004-02-26
Ulysses Currie, a state senator from Prince George's County, was at one time an advocate against the expansion of legalized gambling.
Today, Currie (D) is directing the charge in the other direction. As chairman of the Senate's budget committee, he is urging a plan that would make Maryland a major gambling hub in the East, with 15,500 slot machines at six sites.
When it comes to overturning his stance, Currie has lots of company. Eight other senators who had signed pledges to contest expanded gambling in Maryland voted for a slot machine measure last year.
