Hazel Raceway Takes a Gamble on $35 Million Upgrade - 2004-02-27
Hazel Park Harness Raceway is betting a $35 million expansion will overturn its waning attendance and betting on live and simulcast horse races. The state's $1.2 billion horse racing trade has struggled in recent years to compete with Detroit's three casinos - the first launched in 1999 - while overcoming a stodgy image, aging facilities and falling purses.

“The casinos have come in and made their investments, now it's time for us to compete back,” explained Daniel K. Adkins.

Compulsive Gambler Succeeds in Suit - 2004-02-27
A compulsive gambler who lost his business and attempted commit suicide after generating huge debts on casino blackjack tables and roulette wheels at last hit it lucky in Austria last week.

The country's Appeals Court determined that Christian Hainz should be compensated $834,000 by the operator of two casinos where he claimed that he lost over $4-million in a three-year betting binge.
He disputed that the casino had done nothing to help to resolve his gambling habit and should pay back some of his losses.
