State refutes Vernon Downs harness license; VLT casino is also declined - 2004-02-27
The state Racing and Wagering Board refuted to renew the operating permit for the Vernon Downs harness track on Friday.
The ruling not only cancels a 120-day racing season planned to start April 3, it also stopped -- at least temporarily -- a $3.6 million casino involving video lottery terminals.

Track officials claim the machines could generate $80 million annually, but state legislation prohibits a casino from running unless the track has a license to race horses.

Car-bus clash in canyon kills one - 2004-02-27
A man died Thursday morning in Clear Creek Canyon after he lost control of his car and it rammed into a 56-passenger bus carrying four casino employees who were departing work.

Since gambling began in 1991 in the mountain towns, there has been a constant stream of visitors who travel to the more than 25 casinos.
