Detroit City Council clears hurdle for construction of permanent casinos - 2004-02-28
The Detroit City Council voted Friday to extract its objection to a federal lawsuit settlement between the MotorCity and Greektown casinos and the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians tribe.
Under a 2002 court order, the city is banned from issuing building permits for the casinos until the case is concluded.

Two of the casinos, Greektown and MotorCity, agreed to compensate the tribe $39.5 million each over 25 years. MGM Grand did not settle with the tribe and has filed an objection with the federal court regarding the settlement.
