Plan would place casino within close proximity to Nashville - 2004-02-28
Casino-style gambling may be relocating a lot closer to Middle Tennessee.
Bills were brought in the Kentucky legislature yesterday that would permit five racetracks in that state to have casino permits, one as close as Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky., just across the state line on Interstate 65 — 41 miles from Nashville.

Eric Vanaman of Cottontown stated he likes the concept of having a casino just up the highway.

State refute Vernon Downs' license - 2004-02-28
The state Racing Board secured Vernon Downs on Friday, denying the Oneida County harness track — plagued by debt, questionable financing and regulatory errors — an operating license for 2004.

The Racing Board’s action translates into no racing at Vernon Downs until July, if at all this year. It means the track’s plan to debut a casino with 1,000 video slot machines is in limbo for an indefinite period. And it means layoffs.
