Pubs would battle to make a profit these days if it wasn't for poker machines, say a Palmerston North couple seeking to establish a tavern complex in the city. Vivien Wilson, co-owner of Cress Holdings, stated that the proposed Kaimanawa Tavern required a gambling machine licence to make certain of its viability.

The Wilsons are proposing a big, $1.4 million tavern complex with a TAB, off-licence, restaurant and lunch bar, and are looking for council permission to operate a nine-pokie casino.
