BIA was aware tribe did not measure up to recognition rules - 2004-03-12
The Bureau of Indian Affairs supported federal recognition for the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation in spite of knowing that the tribe did not measure up to the existing agency rules, according to a BIA letter publicly disclosed Thursday.

Federal recognition would offer the Schaghticokes, who have had state recognition for hundreds of years, access to funding for education, health care and housing. It also would make the tribe eligible to run a casino, which it is looking at for sites in Fairfield County.

Harrah's Horseshoe deal is finally rescued -- again - 2004-03-12
The three-way agreement to sell the closed Binion's Horseshoe Casino and Hotel was finalized last week despite an 11th hour bid to buy some of the property on which the downtown casino sits.

O'Donnell's proposal was a mere $5,000 above the price given by West Virginia-based casino operator MTR Gaming Group to buy the land, but the last minute tender met the minimum legal requirements, thereby threatening to scuttle the complex multi-million dollar deal to reopen the Horseshoe and save roughly 900 jobs.
