Kent to join petition of recognition ruling - 2004-03-20
The town of Kent will participate with those appealing the Bureau of Indian Affairs' ruling to award the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation federal recognition.
The tribe claims the status brings eligibility for federal funding for health, education and other perks. It also lets them pursue bargains to launch a casino, and may solidify arguments in pending property claims to 2,150 acres in Kent.

Some legislators contemplating gambling license auction - 2004-03-20
The purchase of a casino license in Illinois for a half billion dollars has some state legislators thinking about the auctioning of gambling licenses if lawmakers make slot machines legal.

The Illinois Gaming Board on Monday granted the state's 10th casino license to Mississippi-based Isle of Capri Casinos Inc., which bid $518 million to construct a casino in northwest Chicago.
Rendell dismissed the concept of auctioning gambling licenses, claiming it was hard to compare tax structures and gambling venues in the two states.
