Speaker hedges his gamble on casinos - 2004-03-04
Minnesota House Speaker Steve Sviggum, who wants to build a state-licensed casino at Canterbury Park, said Thursday he also backs a rival plan for a casino in the northern suburbs.

Sviggum is a co-author, with chief sponsor Rep. Bill Haas, R-Champlin, of legislation to permit the state to operate a suburban casino in a joint venture with the Red Lake and White Earth bands of Ojibwe.

Gambling Advocates Disperse Across State - 2004-03-04
Gambling advocates spread out across the state Thursday, requesting signatures on a petition to make gambling legal in Nebraska.
"The closer proximity you put a casino, more people are going to be affected, more people are going to lose their money," Hazuka explained.

Hazuka said that much of the money generated by casinos goes back to the companies they're controlled by -- it doesn't stay in the state where the casino is situated.
