Harrah's Deemed Top Bidder for Ill. License - 2004-03-05
Casino operator Harrah's Entertainment Inc. on Friday became the leading bidder for an idle casino gaming license the state of Illinois wants to sell to collect money for its ailing budget.

The Illinois Gaming Board chose Harrah's before an auction Wednesday among the three finalists for the permit currently possessed by bankrupt Emerald Casino Inc. The board intends to reveal the winning bidder for the license on March 15.

In the just-reported fourth quarter, operating cash flow from Strip properties surged 25% over last year, fuelled by an impressive 22% rise in revenue per available room (REVPAR) at its hotels.
