Casino project met with criticism - 2004-03-05
Once again, Des Plaines city officials Thursday saw themselves defending their urge to bring a casino to the city, in spite of a 1994 referendum that found the city didn't want one.
The debate came at an assembly of the Illinois Gaming Board where it heard the public on the topic of picking the site for the state's 10th casino license.

"What they failed to say is that we (the city council) did have an open meeting" much more recently than 1994 requesting input on the casino, and anti-casino forces totaled solely 20 people at that meeting, he explained.

State supports Bluffs Run Casino development - 2004-03-05
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission agreed to $38 million of additional development of Bluffs Run Casino in Council Bluffs, in spite of competitors' objections that there are too many existing slot machines in the region.

"America, Iowa, it is all about competition," stated Commissioner Joyce Jarding of Farley as the commission authorized the project 4-0 Thursday.
The project, which will be finalized in April 2005, will include 40,000 square feet of space and undertake a hefty renovation of the existing greyhound track and casino.
